Baxter’s Story

Update: Surgery scheduled for May 26th

by Holly Salzman, Vet Tech at Taylor Ranch Veterinary Clinic.

Baxter is almost a year old. I rescued him from a bad situation where there were over 12 other Chihuahuas (not spayed or neutered) that were living in poor conditions (not allowed to go outside and urinating and defecating on newspapers on the floor.) One bowl of dog food was put out for all so the weakest did not eat well; if at all. Baxter was one of them. He was extremely thin and in poor condition. When I took him in I had him neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested and had blood work run. His blood work showed that his Calcium and vitamin D levels were very low; so low that a simple jump up a step caused his right leg to fracture -snapping the radius and ulna. Five days later, his left leg fractured from the amount of weight he had to bear on it. I raced into the clinic that Saturday morning and Dr. Dana and I splinted the other fractured leg. Baxter and I had a miserable 24 hours. He was in so much pain that I didn’t know if I should keep going. To my surprise, he popped up Sunday morning bright and alert and ready to roll!! Since that day, Baxter has taken big steps forward. All of his blood work has come back normal thanks to vitamins and a good diet and he gets around like you wouldn’t believe considering he is walking on splints. With that said, my only hope for him is that he has a surgery to have plates put in to immobilize the 2 fractures. This is not a surgery either of our clinics are able to perform because of the equipment required so I contacted Judy Babcock from Quixote humane. (They rescue Chihuahua’s.) She said that they will try to help raise the funds to have his procedures done. However, the surgery is very costly. The Surgical Specialist at the E-clinic quoted me $3500. I am praying there are animal lovers out there that would be willing to help me save little Baxter and donate to his fund. I do understand that we are all struggling monetarily now, but I am praying that we can dig deep and help him get the surgery he needs to recover. There is a fund set up at www.quixotehumane.org on Baxter’s behalf. Taylor Ranch Vet and I are donating the splints, bandage material, pain meds, x-rays, follow up visits, etc. to ensure good aftercare but the surgical costs are beyond my control. If you can help with surgical costs I will be eternally grateful. I have rescued many dogs in my 16 years as a tech, but none have touched me like this little guy.

An added note:  I am getting a doggie wheel chair from Santa Fe Animal Clinic. It will help take the weight off Baxter’s front legs and allow him to move around better until his surgery. Baxter currently travels back and forth to work with me and sleeps in the bed under my feet with his little buddy Mater.

Captain ADOPTION IN PROCESS

UPDATE: Captain’s fan club has made it possible to buy his wheels for long walks and a prostheses for his left leg for indoor use. There are funds left over that will be used to fix the two broken legs on another little fellow called Baxter. Thank you to everyone who helped this special little fellow.

Captain was a rescue transfer to Enchantment Chihuahua Rescue from an overcrowded shelter in southern New Mexico. We took several dogs at high risk for euthanasia that day. Most only need basic medical care and a little more time in a foster home and they will be ready for new families. Captain needs more than just a little time.

Born with deformed front legs; the right is a tiny stub clamped close to his body, the left is a bit longer and has a partial paw with pads. Since he was born with his disability, he has learned how to get around pretty well. He can jump up on the couch, balances on his haunches and sometimes walks on his hind legs. Captain can scoot around quickly for short sprints; however, long walks are out of the question. Since he is a young dog we would like to give him the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

There are several companies that make apparatus with wheels for dogs with similar birth defects and injuries. Since he is an adult he is a candidate for custom wheels that can expand his horizon. The cost will be about $600.

Missy

Estimated Birthday October 28, 2006

One of the sweetest little dogs you will ever meet, Missy loves people, puppies, a roll in the grass, and to RUN! Looking at her would never guess the trauma she has gone through.

Missy was pregnant when she was hit by a neighbor’s car. The owners couldn’t afford to take her to a veterinarian and left her untreated for five days to see if she would recover. They decided she needed help they could not give.

X-rays showed that the impact caused her diaphragm to rupture and part of her stomach and liver were pushed into her chest, collapsing one lung. It also appeared that the puppies were still alive. Surgery was done, both puppies survived and Missy proved just what a wonderful dog she is. We bottle fed the babies for a few days until her milk came in and she took over from there.

Her two little boys Josh and Jason were fat little rolly polly pups and have been adopted.

UPDATE: After six months Missy has regained control of her bladder, but is still bowel incontinent. We are going to research the options to see if there is a procedure that will help the nerves in her lower spine to recover and give her normal bowel control.

If you are that special someone who can open your heart and home to this wonderful dog if we are not able to resolve her incontinence issue, please contact us so we can arrange for you to meet this lovely little lady.

In the meantime, if you would like to make a donation to help cover her surgery, please send your donation to: Quixote Humane, P.O. Box 1285, Peralta, New Mexico 87042

Wrangler

Birthday approx July 6, 2005.

Wrangler was probably hit by car, or maybe he fell or was fallen upon. No one knows because he was left in the drop off kennels at the Valencia County shelter. He waited through his stray hold period - which included a holiday. By the time we were able to get him into the veterinary clinic he had been waiting ten days. Of course, we don’t know how long before that he was injured. Though he was in pain he was a good boy and accepted what life had dealt him.

His leg was broken just above the knee. Our vet was pleased that he was able to pull the ends together and pin it, even though some of the muscles and tendons had contracted. It appears that he will recover well and hopefully have full use of his leg.

We think he is a very handsome boy with huge eyes, large upright ears, and a nicely domed head. Just luscious to look at! He is a bit tentative at first but is a sweetie when he feels safe.

UPDATE: After recovering from his broken leg we found that Wrangler also had a luxating patella (loose kneecap) so we had surgery done to correct that, too! In a few weeks he will be as good as new.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Elin

Estimated Birthday April 29, 2006

Elin has a lovely chocolate colored coat with white frosting on her face and bright white tips on her toes and tail. She is housetrained to a doggie door and indoors to a piddle pad. We have yet to hear a peep out of her, so is very quiet.

Elin loves to curl up on a soft blanket or in your lap, which is amazing as she was had to be trapped to bring her into rescue! A woman in El Cerro Mission, a small community east of Los Lunas, had been feed her and a couple of other stray Chihuahuas and a Black lab when she realized Elin had delivered five puppies under her trailer. One of the puppies was dead so she called us to ask for help.

Valencia County Animal Control was able to trap her and then retrieve the puppies, who were about two weeks old. Momma Elin was VERY protective of her babies so we were worried that she was aggressive. Now that the puppies are weaned and she can be a dog - not a momma bear - she has turned into a real sweetheart! Elin should weigh about seven pounds when she gets some weight on after nursing her babies. She will be spay, microchipped, heartworm tested and on preventative, and current on all vaccinations before she is placed.

Elin’s puppies: Tiger, Tee, Bogie and Humming Bird “Birdie” are available for foster-to-adopt after their third puppies shots in early July.

Adoption Fee  $250

Hummingbird

Estimated Birthday April 11, 2010

She was just one and a half pounds at six weeks old; our little “Birdie” is worth her weight in gold. She is super sweet , yet full of it! Her biggest brother weighed four pounds at six weeks, so we think there may have been more than one daddy producing this litter of four. Tiger, Bogie and Tee are bigger and have longer bodies and longer muzzles. We think their daddy is part Dachshund. Little Birdie takes after her mommy, Elin, a chocolate colored Chihuahua. It will be interesting to see how they change in the next couple of months.

ADOPTION FEE $300

Tee

Estimated Birthday April 11, 2010

She is always into something! Tee is the middle of the litter in size and in the middle of everything when they go out to play. Tee is full of curiosity but she also loves to be held and cuddled. She looks a lot like her brothers; Tiger and Bogie, and probably has some Dachshund from her daddy’s side of the family. Her mom is Elin, a chocolate colored Chihuahua. Little Tee is a delightful little dog that should be a great companion for a family with school aged children.

ADOPTION FEE $300

Tiger and Bogie

Estimated Birthday April 11, 2010

Tiger, on the left, is the biggest of Elin’s four puppies. He weighed four pounds at six weeks old. His brother Bogie, on the right, weighed 3 pounds. Tiger is super friendly, big and bold. His brother is a bit timid, waiting for Tiger to make the first move. We think their daddy may be part Dachshund because of their long bodies and drop ears. Both boys are solid black. Their mom, Elin, is a chocolate colored seven pound Chihuahua.

ADOPTION FEE $250 each or $400 for both.

Jacqueline

Estimated Birthday May 24, 2007

There were over 200 dogs living on the property in Northern New Mexico. Jacqueline was one of the lucky ones - because she was small she lived inside. When the owner fell ill the family finally decided it was time to take control of the situation and placed them with rescues and animal control facilities. Jackie is one of twelve we took into Chihuahua Rescue that day.

She is a large Chihuahua mix; weighing about twelve pounds. She is still a bit nervous around new people, but is very mellow given all she has been through lately. She will turn into a great little companion after she gets used to her new home. With a little bit of encouragement she will be a lifelong, loving friend. Give her a chance to see what a real home can be.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Heidi II (ADOPTED!)

and Puppies

Estimated Birthday November 10, 2006

Heidi had her puppies in a hoarders home in northern New Mexico. She shared that home with over 200 other dogs. She is a great little momma to her three little girls: Hilda (ADOPTED!), Hannah, and Helga .

Her life before she came to our rescue was full of chaos and yet she has kept a lovely temperament. You can only imagine the difficulty of birthing and caring for her puppies in the world she lived in. She deserves a peaceful place to learn what she has been missing in a loving home.

Heidi is a Chihuahua mix weighing under six pounds. Her puppies appear to be mostly Chihuahua, as well. They will be available for adoption after their third set of vaccinations in December.

ADOPTION FEE: Puppies $250 each.

Chino

Estimated Birthday November 18, 2004

Sometimes it isn’t possible to get the history of a dog released to us. This fellow came from a family member of a friend of one of our volunteers. Supposedly he was bought at a pet shop at the Cottonwood Mall but was given to a family member who is now moving and cannot take him . . .

No paperwork, no vet records, no point in looking beyond the fact that he is incredibly handsome and super sweet. We will know more about his personality and behavior after he has been in foster care for a while. In the meantime, enjoy his looks and consider adopting our preppy little boy.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Red Baron II

Estimated Birthday November 9, 2008

Just another stray dog from southern New Mexico. One of thousands picked up every year, held in a shelter for a few days and then put up for adoption. If not adopted they are euthanized; simply because there are too many dogs and cats and not enough homes.

Lucky for someone, this little treasure escaped to a rescue before his fate was sealed in a black bag and a land fill. How can it be that a great little dog like this could be turned into trash instead of turning into some ones precious little gem? People who adopt rescue dogs understand and make a difference - even if only for the one.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Pequin

Estimated Birthday May 8, 2008

This precious little pup was hit-by-car, or so his owner says. They couldn’t afford to have the broken leg fixed so our veterinarian called and asked if we would be willing to take him. We agreed and the owner brought him back to the clinic and released him to us.

He is a very sweet little boy, terrific temperament and is pretty much housetrained already. He has been neutered, vaccinated and will have the pin in his leg removed in the next few weeks.

His foster mom would love to have a loving home for him while he is still young and can make the transition more easily. She welcomes a potential adopter to come and meet him and form a loving bond while he is still recovering.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Seabiscuit

Estimated Birthday July 9, 2004

Picked up as a stray in Roswell, this little boy has no known history. He is a cute little guy - only about six and a half pound of love bug. There is probably a story behind his crooked chin, we will never know it. But, it sure adds to his cuteness!

Seabiscuit was named after his horse-like gallop when her runs in the yard with his foster buddies. “Biscuit” is about five or six years old and one of the greatest little dogs in the world according to his foster mom.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Charlie Brown

Estimated Birthday January 13, 2007

Charlie Brown was found as a stray in Albuquerque. The people who found him couldn’t keep him but didn’t want to take him to the shelter, either. We agreed to take him in and try to find the owner through ads and notifying the city shelter. After several weeks of waiting we had him vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. The only thing left to do for him is find a loving home.

Charlie Brown is a long legged young adult Chihuahua mix with a terrific personality. At eleven pounds he is small enough for apartment life, but big enough to hit the trail for a hike. He is great with other small dogs and we think he would like to have a child of his own.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Gidget

Estimated Birthday June 2, 2006

Gidget is a very bright and happy little gal with lots of energy. She loves to play outside with toys and go for walks. About three years old and about nine pounds, Gidget is not a couch potato so would like to find a home with some activity. We think she is part Terrier because of a little wire in her coat and a full twist in her tail.

She is used to using a doggy door and has been good about not having accidents in the house. She has been in a foster home with several other small dogs, but would prefer to spend more time with people than the dogs.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Oscar

Estimated Birthday August 3, 2005

This very adorable, playful little ten pound boy is about four years old, but he has the awkward cuteness of a puppy. He was found as a stray in Rio Rancho. He is possibly a Chihuahua (size and coat color and length) and Shih Tzu (under bite and turned out front legs) mix and other small dog breeds.

He does well with other dogs, cats and children. He is gentle and oh so sweet. He likes to run zoomies around the back yard and then plop down in someone’s arms to snuggle. Head scratching and belly rubs are also very welcome and make his eyelids droop. He is very responsive to coming when he is called. He is an all-around a happy dog that will always be a puppy at heart.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Sage

Estimated Birthday January 15, 2008

A truck driver spotted this little seven pound fellow hitchhiking on a road south of Taos. The driver went door to door in the area he found him, but no one knew who his owners were. The local shelter didn’t have a report of a matching lost dog so we finally had him neutered and microchipped (so he can be identified if he gets lost again) and now have him available for adoption.

Sage is a clown prince among Chihuahuas. With a twinkling eye and a joyous prance, he makes people forget their worries. Equally comfortable hiking or lying around, Sage enjoys the company of children, other dogs, cats, and ferrets. He shies away from strangers at first, and then comes up for love and attention, never showing any signs of aggression. He loves kisses and snuggles, rawhides and soft toys. His home is his castle and he will alert his people to anyone coming near. He is very intelligent – house, leash, and crate trained, and not afraid of heights at all.

Guess he is ready to settle down!

ADOPTION FEE $200

Vanessa

Estimated Birthday July 23, 2007

Back yard breeding is a problem throughout New Mexico. But the southern part of the state seems to take pride in being at the bottom of the negligence heap. As sweet as she is, little Vanessa should not have been bred. Hundreds of little dogs are euthanized every month because there are not enough homes to take them all, yet here is another who came to us ready to burst with her mix breed puppies. She will never have to go through that again - and neither will her darling puppies that were born four days after she come into our rescue.

You can tell how sweet she is by looking into her lovely brown eyes and seeing her perpetual little smile. She is a pale fawn color and weighs just over ten pounds. Vanessa will make a great companion for a home with school aged children or an all adult home looking for a little dog who is just aching to give someone all of her puppy love.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Lucille Ball

Estimated Birthday May 3, 2005

This gentle little girl responds to the nickname, “Lelu”. She was found in Artesia and was treated for a blood disease spread by tics and had a lump removed from her side that was the result of a hernia. She is now recovered from her illness and better than ever. Her foster parents see a new glow in here eyes now that she has experienced love and care.

Lelu does well with other dogs and doesn’t mind company, but would be just fine in a home with no other pets so she can be center stage. She is very quiet and independent, but loves affection and attention. She is doing excellent with potty training. When her foster parents walk in the door from work every day she greets them eagerly with a little vocalization – it’s truly adorable. Lelu likes cuddling on the couch and watching movies. At night she loves to sleep in a blanket at the foot of the bed or next to the bed. Lelu is ready to be someone’s cuddle bunny for life! This pretty chocolate and cream girl weighs about 8 pounds.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Elvira

Estimated Birthday June 12, 2009

You can see the worry in this poor little girl’s eyes, she just came into rescuer and we took away her puppies to do her photo. She is very concerned about her babies because she had them at the shelter and motherhood has been so stressful for her. She is barely more than a puppy herself and she gave birth to four little boys that we named after the Oak Ridge Boys; Duane, Joe, Richard and William Lee (Willy).

She is feeling more comfortable now that she is in a foster home where the boys are safe and warm. Her foster mom says she is a sweet, loving and happy dog . She likes to play with people and the other dogs . Good in the car and on a leash . Has the most joyous response to the command to “sit!”

ADOPTION FEE $250

Butch Cassidy

Estimated Birthday July 12, 2008

Finally caught in a trap after running, scared half to death in the downtown area for weeks, Butch Cassidy was finally captured and taken to the shelter. Just a youngster, he needs to have some time to adjust to life in a loving home. His foster mom has been able to hand feed him and pick him up after about three months, but every day he gets more confident.

Butch Cassidy loves the puppies and plays like a silly boy with them. He is comfortable with the adult dogs, too. He just isn’t quite sure that people are as nice as dogs yet.

He weighs about ten pounds and has the most brilliant red long haired with perfect white markings. An investment in time will turn this handsome boy into a loving and darling little man.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Cha-Cha

Estimated Birthday May 9, 1998

Cha-cha is a leggy little lady. Her owner was facing a certain end so she surrendered her two beloved furkids to us to ease her mind about their future. Cha-cha has spent time in two different foster homes and, possibly because her owner was female, seems to respond better to women over men. However, give her time, let her come to you, and she’ll end up jumping into your chair and settling down next to your leg for a comfortable snooze.

After several visits to the veterinarian it was decided that her left eye needed to be removed because of chronic dry eye and repeated infections. We also had to have most of her remaining teeth removed. ChaCha is a bit stiff from old age but the arthritis doesn’t keep her from chasing cats. She recently exercised one of her foster dad’s cats the length of the back yard and over the fence. It’s a big yard.

Cha-cha has a good appetite for whatever is on the menu in her multi-dog foster home. At night, she’s been sleeping on a chair in the living room with a towel she kicks around to make a nest that suits her. She’s first at the door to go out in the morning and has a couple favorite spots in the back yard to lay in the sun.

This little old gal would do best in a forever home with an older person or couple (but no cats) who would move at an easy going pace and have the time to devote to her.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Coco Channel

Estimated Birthday September 30, 1999.

PREVIOUS BIO: Alzheimers slowly took away the reality of her owner and completely changed little Coco’s life. The daughter tried to cope with the loss of her mother and tried to care for her mother’s dog, Coco. Somewhere there are papers to prove she is a purebred. Somewhere there are memories of happy times together. But little Coco can’t share any of that history with us.

She was so distressed at first, that she walked in circles, around and around and around. She didn’t want to eat for the first few days and had the saddest looking eyes. But now, she is stuck like glue to the foster dad. She follows him everywhere and snuggles in his lap or cuddles next to him in bed at night.

Pretty Coco Chanel needs a quiet home where she can make her spot in the sun and fluff up a blanket on the couch. She should have a consistent schedule with a family that can help her put the memories of her lost owner behind her and create a new life filled with love. Coco is about eight years old and weighs 8 pounds.

UPDATE: Though her new owner's son promised to take in Coco if his mother no longer could, he changed his mind. His mother went into assisted living and Coco Chanel came back to us. We will try again to find a forever home for her. If you have room for one more little old gal please contact us.

Do your pets a huge service - write a will - make a trust - and get a real commitment from the people who say they will take your pets if something happens to you.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Foster

Estimated Birthday March 7, 2004

A family was ready to adopt this little boy from the City of Albuquerque Animal Care Center but decided not to finalize the adoption when he tested positive for heartworm. They released him to our rescue so we could put him into foster care and get him ready for adoption.

We had him neutered and vaccinated and will assess his treatment plan as well as his temperament. We will update his bio when we know more about his personality.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Tosha

Estimated Birthday March 23, 2006

Her unusual reverse cream and blue gives little Tosha an exotic look. She was one of five dogs surrendered by the owner who had to go into a nursing home. One of the youngest, she probably didn’t get as much one-on-one handling as the woman’s older dogs. It will take a little time in a home that will give her space and calm support to turn her into a trusting and loving companion. But it will be well worth the time and effort in the long run.

Wouldn’t it be grand to look into those eyes and see your love reflected? Tosha is about seven pounds and around two or three year old.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Laverne - ADOPTED! 07/25/2009

Laverne and Shirley

Estimated Birthday August 3, 2008

Harkening back to their namesake TV series, if we hadn’t picked up this pair of pretty girls on a Sunday, they would have been ”cancelled” on Monday and never seen the light of day on Tuesday. Picked up as strays in Carlsbad, our rescue was this pair’s last hope for a new home.

Laverne (ears up) and Shirley (ears down) are probably Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua mix and at under a year old are high energy very active like teenage girls. Laverne currently weighs five and a half pounds and Shirley weighs four and a half. They get along great with other dogs and people and are very affectionate. How cute do two little dogs need to be? Though they are great buddies, they do not have to be adopted together.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Cocoa Man

Estimated Birthday 3/13/2006

Cocoa man’s name was picked because of his color of his soft and silky coat. This highly active young fellow really knows how to burn off excess energy. He might run a half dozen zoomies in a big circle around the recliner in the den, chase a resident cat (he doesn’t like them) over the back fence, or roughhouse with other dogs his age and size. An excellent alarm dog, Cocoa man will let you know if someone is coming or going. Visitors are greeted and said goodbye to the same way. He must think that’s his job.

He can become pretty attached to people. His foster mom recounted starting out the door to run some errands and having him grab her foot with his front paws because he didn’t want her to leave. We think he may have had a seizure in the past, but has no recent reoccurrence and isn’t on any meds. The owner in Los Lunas released him to rescue because she started a new job in Albuquerque and was gone for more than ten to twelve hours a day. Cocoa Man prefers his family to be home more than that. In fact, a stay at home mom and a school aged kid or two would suit him just fine. This sturdy little guy weighs about seven pounds and would be a marvelous addition to almost any home.

ADOPTION FEE $200

Audrey Rose

Estimated Birthday November 13, 1998.

A sweetheart of a little old gal was brought into the Valencia County Shelter by the owner’s father. He said his daughter couldn’t keep her any more. We didn’t get to ask why she had to give a up a dog she had since she was a puppy. We can only imagine the circumstances that would make keeping darling Audrey Rose as a loved member of the family until her last breath - hopefully many years from now.

She will be a great little friend for an older home where she can snuggle and cuddle with someone with a heart as big as she is. Audrey Rose is about seven and a half pounds of sugar sweet love.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Dixie Darling

Estimated birthday March 6, 2006

Absolutely terrified at the shelter, little Dixie Darling was considered not adoptable. She is fearful of people at first, but is warming up in a quiet surrounding and a foster mom who understands her needs.

Dixie Darling is only five pounds and about three years old. She will do best in a mature home with a low activity level and a family that will take their time to help her overcome her worries.

Though she will never be a social butterfly, Dixie Darling will make a loving friend for someone who is able to give their heart to a frightened little dog. If you have ever experienced the joy of gaining the trust of an animal that needs a kind spirit to guide them, you will understand what we are looking for in a new home for this little girl.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Prince Valiant

Birthday Estimated January 9, 1999

His registered name is Prince Valiant of Hahn, but is called “Vali” for short. He was purchased as a puppy but the owners divorced and he was given to grandmother where he lived for the past eight years. Now grandmother has passed away and Vali needed to be re-homed again.

We picked him up from the granddaughter’s home, along with two other Chihuahuas. We had hoped to have time to find foster homes but recognized that the current situation was not good for the tiny dogs.

We thought he had a growth on his chest but after clipping away the hair it appears he had a sever bruise. He had a mouth full of bad teeth so we had a dental done after doing a blood chem. panel and CBC to make sure he's healthy enough for the procedure. All of his blood levels are within the normal range.

Only one thing left to do - find him a great retirement home.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Momma Cass

Estimated Birthday December 2, 2006

Ready to burst with puppies, Momma Cass was found as a stray in Artesia. We agreed to take her in and help her deliver her puppies and find her a home. Within days she had four puppies - all healthy and, of course, cute. We have no idea who daddy was. Only time will tell if there are clues to his mix of breeds.

Momma Cass is mostly Chihuahua with a hint of a breed with an under bite and longer body. She is a darling girl that appreciates a little bit of love, a warm bed and knowing she doesn’t have to worry about her next meal.

About nine pounds, Cassy has an unusual dark reverse brindle tri color coat and the most smoochable face! She is going to be the love of someone’s life. (Think snuggle).

ADOPTION FEE $250

Madelina (Maddie)

Birthday approx July 18, 2006.

Just another Valencia County stray.

And, yet again, we ask ourselves how can this be?

About two years old and weighing about seven pounds, this lovely shy girl was wandering the streets alone. Perhaps her owners decided they couldn’t afford to have the mass removed on her tummy. Perhaps they didn’t notice she had a large bulge on her belly. We will never know why she ended up at the shelter, but we knew she would not be adopted with her heath concerns so she came into rescue. It was a hernia that was easily repaired when we had her spayed.

“Maddie” is a little timid with strangers, but is looking for a soft voice to sooth her fears. No doubt this little princess will become the light of some ones life. Are you the one who will spoil her rotten? Meet our little Madelina and see . . .

ADOPTION FEE $250

Reba

Birthday November 19, 2003.

Our veterinarian estimates her age at only four years. Look at her face and sad eyes and you can see she has aged a bit more because of her puppy mill background.

We had her mammary tumors removed and a dental done while she was under being spayed. But we can’t remove the sad life she was born into, almost bred to death.

Reba is in a foster home where she is learning that people can offer her love and affection, as well as just kibble and water. She is coming out of her shell shock of a life and beginning to get a sparkle in her eyes.

Reba needs a home that is quiet and understanding of a sweet little dogs’ need for extra time and patience to give her confidence that life is good.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Sabrina and Savanna

Birthday approx October 15, 2007.

These two lovely young ladies were found as strays in a park in Albuquerque. We placed want ads and called the shelters trying to find the owners, but no one claimed them. We would love for them to be adopted together as they are great company for each other and are best of friends.

We know it is a big commitment to adopt two dogs at one time, but we think you will be delighted you did if you bring home the twins. They keep each other company, are very well trained, housebroken and very sweet tempered. Double your pleasure and give these two sweethearts a forever home together. They each weigh just over ten pounds - less than a large bag of dog food combined!

They are spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and current on heartworm preventative.

ADOPTION FEE $250 each or $400 for both

Tinka

Birthday approx April 1, 2004.

Handed from family to family we don’t know where she came from or how she ended up in the family that released her to us. They just said that she was nippy with the kids. They have four children of their own and two they babysit - all under the age of five. With so many young children tormenting her and the other inconsistencies in her life, Tinka has built a defensive wall with strangers. It takes her at least three or four days to come out of her kennel and start to get to know new people in her life.

She has been in two foster homes and one foster to adopt home looking for the right match. It will take a person who is willing to give her time to adjust and understands her needs to bring her around to being the loving dog she is in her current foster home.

If you are looking for a gorgeous little longhair dog and have a patient and quiet home you really need to consider Tinka. We will not adopt her to a family with children. She is fine with the other foster dogs and would do well with one or two other small dogs as companions. Tinka weights seven and a half pounds and is about four years old.

ADOPTION FEE $250

Honey Bee

Birthday approx July 1, 2006

Passed from family to family, pretty Honey Bee had been abused and neglected. Her first owner, a young girl, broke up with her boyfriend because he was abusing her and the dog. She moved in with a family member, but they wouldn’t allow her to keep her little girl there. Passed on to another family, Honey Bee became even more fearful and nippy. The terrified little dog was finally locked in the garage because they didn’t know how to deal with her fear. They were going to take her to the shelter but were told to call us to see if we could help find her a home.

Thank goodness we had just placed a dog and could bring her in before she ended up in a place where she would have had even more stress in her life. Within a couple of days she was in her foster moms lap giving kisses, asking for hugs, and sleeping under the covers. It will take a little while for her to learn to trust people in general, but for now she is taking it one step at a time.

If you have patience, a kind heart and are willing to give her a chance you will end up with a gorgeous little snuggle baby. Honey Bee is about seven pounds and a bit over a year old.

UPDATE: Honey Bee’s foster mom says this little gal is a hoarder! She gathers up all of the toys, chewies and odd n ends and stashes them in the close and then stands guard.

ADOPTION FEE $225

Mad Eye Moody

Birthday approx August 20 ,2002.

Found as a stray in Albuquerque, this little boy’s eye was damaged beyond repair. We had it removed and he has recovered wonderfully! He is great with the other dogs, but is quiet and prefers to spend time in your lap rather than doing zoom doggy through the house.

Moody is about five years old and weighs eight pounds. A little lover boy, he has a beautiful golden coat with frosting on his muzzle. He will be a terrific companion for a family that likes to spend quiet time together.

Moody is using the doggie door and has not been marking in his foster home.

UPDATE: His foster mom says that he is well trained to the leash, knows most basic commands and is using the doggie door and has not been marking. He is a perfect gentleman.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Linda Lou

Birthday approx September 6, 2000

Overnight someone put this little dog in the drop off box outside the Valencia County Shelter gates. She has had puppies in the past but her huge hernias would make that impossible now. Did a backyard breeder decide to get rid of her because she couldn’t produce anymore? Did someone find her and decide they couldn’t afford her medical bills to fix what looked like a huge tumor?

We ask ourselves over and over how such a sweet dog could end up at the shelter where they only have three days to be reclaimed. But, for Linda Lu, it doesn’t matter anymore. We have had her hernias repaired and two tiny mammary tumors removed. She has been spayed and is current on all vaccinations. When all was done, we have found that she has a hearing problem. Either she can hear some loud noises or is able to sense sound through vibrations or the actions of the other foster dogs. She gets along great with the other dogs and adores people!

This precious girl is only six and a half pounds and most of that is tail wagging all the time. We think she is a Chihuahua Dachshund mix and is about seven years old.

ADOPTION FEE $150

Jubilee

Birthday approx January 17, 2001

It will take a little while for Jubilee to gain trust in a new home. She was surrendered by her owner to the Albuquerque shelter, and she just doesn’t understand why she lost her family. But a lot of love and a little time will turn this pretty little princess into the perfect companion for an older couple or retired person.

Her huge, dark eyes show the sadness in her heart. Are you the one who can bring a bright sparkle and tail wags to this little five pound girl? You will be well rewarded for your efforts if you bring this sweet baby home to love and spoil.

ADOPTION FEE - $150

Kailee

Birthday approx June, 1999.

This dainty little four and a half pound sweet heart is so kissy and huggable! Isn’t she gorgeous?! All she wants is to snuggle with someone and give them her whole heart. She is just too precious for words.

We would love to find an older couple who want a baby to spoil rotten to adopt our little princes.
